A really interesting setup at this pool safety inspection in Redland Bay this week. The house was a “U” shape. Tucked in the “U” was a verandah up top and patio and pool down below. The section at the back of the house was bedrooms converted to office space. As I said, quite unique.
The pool was quite small and tucked up against two sides of the house. The windows were security grilled which is great so no problems there. Regrettably, the CPR resuscitation sign was in tatters and on the ground amongst other stuff. Putting a new one up on the wall sorted that out.
Redland Bay has really gone ahead with the explosion of Victoria Point in recent years. There are new estates popping up everywhere. The shops are handy at Victoria Point and there is plenty of variety in the types of shops. Anyway, back to the pool inspection.
The gate however was an odd arrangement. There was a horizontal rail about 450mm up from the ground that could be used to stand on and gain access to the gate latch/lock. Because the verticals were greater than 10mm apart (as is the case with aluminium pool fences) a sheet of perspex was attached to the rear (pool side) of the gate. This prevented it from being used as a stepping point.
The only other issue with the pool laws was a gap greater than 100mm under one section of the fence. A timber slat was attached to the underside of the bottom rail which closed this gap down to 100mm. The theory with the 100mm is a child up to the age of 5 would have a hard time getting their head through such a small gap. Given that the dogs had previously been getting under there, it was no surprise this had to be closed up. Dogs getting through fences is a tell tale sign that the gap is too large.
I am a local bloke in the Redlands and lived here most of my life. If you live in surrounding suburbs to Redland Bay like Mount Cotton, Cornubia or Victoria Point I would be pleased to conduct your pool inspection. My rates are very competitive and I am available at short notice. If you want your pool inspection done correctly, please give me a call.
