Every so often I come across a pool that requires very little attention to achieve compliance. This week a pool inspection in Alexandra Hills was one such occasion. Keep in mind though that I service all of the Redlands (except the islands) so suburbs like Capalaba, Wellington Point, Ormiston and Cleveland all fall in this area.
This particular property was on a corner block and the pool fence backed onto both frontages. An 1800mm high Colourbond fence housed the pool on those frontages which meant the non-climbable zone could be deemed to be on the inside of the fence but this was not necessary because the outside was well above the 1200mm requirement and had grass on one side and around the corner non-climbable, spiky foliage. This is a deterrent against kids trying to gain access to the top of the fence to scale it and considered acceptable.
I want to bring your attention to a window that was not compliant though. There were 2 windows, one with a security screen and one without. Because the owner was keen to get the pool inspection certified so the house could be rented/leased the quickest viable option was to place a screw or bolt in the runner in the base of the window. This was placed 100mm from when the window is in the closed position, hence the window opened no more than 100mm. Problem solved !
There other instances where the 100mm standard is used in assessing a pool’s certification. For Eg; the gap between the bottom of the fence and the ground must be not more than 100mm. This applies to the gate as well. 100mm is deemed not to allow a capable child the age of 5 or under from passing through the gap. Another instance is the gap between the vertical uprights of a fence. Not only must the gap be no more than 100 but when the squeeze test is applied the gap between palings either to the left or right is not more than 105mm. The squeeze test is a handshake-like grip on the palings. There is a formal standard that can be applied whereby a cone of a certain size is unable to be pulled through the palings with a specified amount of force but it is a device you are not likely to see a pool inspector carrying and using. I tend to apply a little more pressure than a handshake just to be on the safe side.
If you live in Alexandra Hills, Cleveland, Ormiston or Wellington Point I would very much like to conduct your pool inspection. I provide a very thorough service so you have peace of mind. I will also advise you of your obligations in keeping the pool barrier compliant.
